28th
The 18th World Championships began yesterday and the gymnasts are offering us a great show. The FIG received requests for evaluation for more than 100 new elements and we discovered them the whole day long.
As I only got the results on paper, I don't have enough time to encode them. They should be available on the FIG and/or the Gymmedia websites.
The most exiting competition up to now is the mixed pairs one where after the balance and tempo exercises the difference between the first (USA) and the second (RUS) place is only 0.07.
The bad surprise comes from China. They presented the most difficult exercises but their choreographies are so poor that they loose in artistry what they earn with their difficulty.
The good ones comes from the Belgian men's pair and from the Australian trio. Since they won an international meet in Ukraine, Philippe and Kenny prooved us how good they are, their second place remains however a good surprise.
Even though I knew Yuri Stepchenkov in working in Australia for one and a half year, their women's trio completely surprised me with an exellent and original balance exercise. With 17.44, only Russia could get a higher score. Unfortunately for them, there are no balance and tempo finals anymore.

31st
World Cup Series, Puurs, Belgium :

As I didn't have the opportunity to go to Belgium this year, the following comments are only based on the results found on the World Cup official website www.fiac.be.

First competition day, a bad day for the 2004 vice world champion.

In both categories where the current vice-world champions are present, they didn't confirmed their status and both the mens four from Ukraine and the Russian mixed pair are currently in third. In the Mixed pair event, Anna Kochalova and Revaz Gurgenidze received a surprising adjusted difficulty score of 8.86 for their balance exercise. With a total of 26.960, they are more than 1.5 behind the current leaders Tiffany Cuyt and Yves Vander Donkt from Belgium.
The men's group performed their dynamic exercise. The men's group from Ukraine received the highst adjusted diffulty score with 9.99 but with a total score of 27.490, they are currently in third position, behind the men's groups from Russia and Great Britain. The Brits Barry Hindson, Stuart McKenzie, Scott Patterson and David Scott are first with a total score of 27.670.
In the other events, the polish women's pair Magdalena Wegrzynowicz and Anna Miadzielec, the Men's pair Serhiy Popov and Mykola Shcherbak from Ukraine and the russian women's group Tatiana Alexeeva, Elena Kirilova and Elena Moiseeva are leading after the first exercise.

April 2005 :

1st
World Cup Series, Puurs, Belgium : About the difficulty score.

Out of 54 exercises performed in the preliminaries, 8 have a difficulty score of 10.0 or more. Only 2 pairs received such a difficulty score for both of their exercises. Thet are the belgian mixed pair Tiffany Cuyt and Yves Vander Donkt and the men's pair from Ukraine Serhiy Popov and Mykola Shcherbak.
Because of the many restrictions brought by the new code for the women's groups balance exercise, no trio could perform such an exercise with a difficulty score of 10 or more. The russian group Magdalena Wegrzynowicz and Anna Miadzielec, however, was close with a difficulty score of 9.85. Therefore, no one should be surprised to see such exercises performed out of 10.0 either during the next World games or the european championships.

3rd
World Cup Series, Puurs, Belgium : The favorites win the finals.

In the mixed pairs event, Tiffany Cuyt and Yves Vander Donkt were leading after the preliminaries but surprisingly, they didn't perform their combined exercise out of 10.0. Just like one month ago in Vinitsa, they finish second behind the russian Anna Kochalova and Revaz Gurgenidze. The ukrainian Maryna Shevchuk and Sergiy Pelepets take the 3rd place.
Russia also takes the first place in the women's group event while Ukraine wins in the three other events, i.e. women's pairs, men's pairs and men's groups.

2006 World Championships : organizer wanted
As mentioned on the F.I.G website, the 2005 acrobatic World Cup Final has been cancelled as no bid has been received by the FIG.
Bids for the 2007 world cup final and the 2006 and 2008 World championships were expected at the FIG council held at the end of May. In Memoriam Dr. Patricia Wade.
It is with great sadness that I learned from the FIG website that Dr Patricia Wade passed away today November 22, 2010.
I had the honor to meet and talk with Dr Wade during the 2001 European Championships in Faro, Portugal. Later I exchanged a few emails with her. Even though, we met only once, she never failed to answer with nice and encouraging words. The courage with which she faced her illness can only force admiration for this truly remarkable Lady. I will miss her.
To her family and friends, I extend my sincere condolences.

World Championships : some statistics.
The coming World Championships will the 5th World event help in the United States and the second World Championships outside of Europe, the first one being the 1994 edition in Beijing, China. Previous world events held in the USA were the 1983 World Cup in Cedar Rapids, the 1987 World Cup in Baton Rouge, the 1997 Junior World Championships in Hawai and the 2009 World Cup Series in St Paul.
With the participation of countries from South America, namely Brazil and Columbia, it is the first time that all continents will be represented at an Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships. The other country participating for the first time (at least in recent history) is Tajikistan. These 3 new countries however didn't help increasing the overall participation as delegations from the Czech Republic, Spain, Georgia, Lithuania and Moldova will be missed.

Errata (2011-04-22) :
- The 2009 World Cup series was missing in the previous version of this post.

40 years!
This November marks the 40th anniversary of the creation of the International Sports Acrobatics Federation. The Constituent Congress was held on November 22-23, 1973 in Moscow with participants from Bulgaria, Cuba, Eastern and Western Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Poland, the USA, the USSR an one observer from Yugoslavia.
Mr Stoil Sotirov was then elected President of the IFSA and he kept this position until, 25 years later, the 1998 Congress approved the federation merger within the FIG.
During its 25 years of existence, the federation organised World Championships, World Cups and European Championships in both Acrobatic Gymnastics (then known as Sports Acrobatics) and Tumbling. It received the olympic recognition in 1985 but never managed to have its disciplines included in the Olympic Games program. Sports Acrobatics was first included in the World Games program in its 3rd edition in 1993 in The Hague, The Netherlands.

To celebrate this 40th anniversary, I have the pleasure to share with you, my readers, the minutes of the Constituent Congress of the International Sports Acrobatics Federation. Many thanks to Gizela Zielinska who sent me the document.

The anniversary will be commemorated during the FIG Executive Committee meeting on November 22,2013 and might be celebrated during the inaugural Pat Wade Classic over the week-end.
Click here for the news entry on the FIG website.

Other notable milestones include the 60th anniversary of the Polish Sports Acrobatics Federation celebrated last year, and 65 years of Acrobatic Gymnastics in Rzeszów, Poland which will be celebrated during the Grand Prix of Poland, November 22-24, 2013.

More past and future events can be found on the results and the calendar pages.

The 2015 European Games Qualifications
Following the World Championships in Levallois-Perret (FRA), the UEG published the counties who qualified for the first European Games. You can find them on their European Games page.
EDITED TO ADD (7/30): In the Mixed Pairs category, only 9 European countries competed at the Senior World Championships. However, rules were established to ensure the qualification of 11 countries. Azerbaijan, as the host country, benefits from these rules. Bulgaria didn't have a senior mixed pair in Levallois but their 13-19 pair competing at the WAGC gives this country the last qualifying spot.
In the Women's Groups category, Poland ended the World Championships qualifications as the 11th European country. Because Azerbaijan was part of the top 10 and was guaranteed a spot as the host country, Poland also gets to send a trio to the European Games.
The next step is for the National Olympic Committees to confirm the use of the allocated spots. They have until August 3rd, 2014 to do so.

US Acro gymnasts rock it on TV
Last Saturday, British actor Bobby Lockwood won Tumble, a BBC show where celebrities have to learn gymnastics with the help of a coach and a "pro-partner". Lockwood's pro-partner was 2009 World Games and 2010 World Championships mixed pair champion Kristin Allen (USA).
Here is a video of their final performance. More information about this show can be found here.

Just a few days later Acro Army finished at the third place in the TV show America's Got Talent. Even though they didn't win the group made a huge promotion for our sport in the US. Clarification about the individual elements
The Acro Newsletter Nr. 6 contains important information on how to apply the limitation of elements that was approved by the FIG Executive Committee on May 7-8, 2014.
Regarding the individual elements in the combined exercise, it mentions : "All individual elements in a series must be declared on the tarif sheet and will receive difficulty. If an individual element is repeated, or not declared, the element(s) that follow are also given no difficulty."
Here below is an example to clarify this rule :
- Cat 2: Round off, Flic, back tuck (everthing is ok)
- Cat 1: Round off, straight salto to split (because the round off is a repetition, the salto to split will not count for difficulty).

Hoping some of you will find this example useful.

The same day, the Polish Gymnastics Association voted a modification of its statute to add the Acrobatic Gymnastics, Trampoline and other disciplines.

We wish all involved in Acro, Tumbling and Trampoline in Poland a successful merger.

The 2015 World Cup
The definitive registrations for the World Cup stage in Maia (POR) and the provisional entries for those in Varna (BUL) and Geneva (SUI) are available on the FIG website.
The provisional entries promise a strong attendance for the last 2 stages with 11 WP, 22 MxP, 17 MP, 19 WG and 9 MG coming from 16 countries for the stage in Bulgaria and 11 WP, 15 MxP, 16 MP, 19 WG and 10 MG representing 14 countries for the one in Switzerland.
The provisional entries for Maia were also promising but, unfortunately, the definitive entries show a steep decline in the number of participants with "only" 9 countries sending a total of 2 WP, 10 MxP, 7 MP, 7 WG and 2 MG. For the women's pairs and the men's groups, this means that no World Cup Points will be given at the Portuguese stage.
The definitive entries for the two other stages are due 2 months prior to the event, let's hope we won't see a similar decline in the number of participants.

On a personal note.
30 years ago this month, my dear friend Philippe asked me the one question that would change my life forever.
He was the acro teacher at the circus school of Brussels and told me about a coaches course his boss wanted him to attend. He then asked "Can you come with me?". Little did we know that I was up to discover the Acrobatic Gymnastics and fall in love with it.
This may sound inconsequential to you but this website wouldn't exist hadn't he ask me this simple question. So, thank you Philippe!

The Youth Olympic Games
Earlier this year, The FIG EC included the Acrobatic Mixed Pairs into their YOG program with an age limit of 15-19. This program has to be approved by the International Olympic Committee to become effective. The next Youth Olympic Games are scheduled for 2018 in Buenos Aires (ARG)

The first Pan-American Championships.
The definitive entries for the 1st Pan-American Championships are available on the Fig Website.
Five counties will participate, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, USA and the host Puerto Rico. The biggest competitions will be in the Women's Pairs 11-16 with 7 pairs from 4 countries, the Women's Groups 12-18 with 6 trios representing 3 countries and the Women's Groups 11-16 with 4 groups, also from 3 countries.

17th
The Asian Championships
The Asian Championships will be held September 17-19, 2015 in Hangzhou, China. This competition will also serve as a preparation for the next World Championships which will also be organized in China next year.
The Definitive Registrations are available on the AGU website. Gymnasts from 6 countries, namely China, Japan, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, are registered in this competition for Seniors and the 11-16 age group.
Although they took part in the 2013 Asian Championships, Iran and Kyrgyzstan sadly didn't send registrations this year. With a member in the AGU Acro Technical Committee, one could have expected a first participation from Pakistan but this won't be the case. Let's hope these 3 countries and others will be present for the next edition.
With the home advantage, China is the main favorite and has the biggest delegation with one or 2 pairs/groups in every event except the seniors mixed pairs. After an impressive performance at the 2014 World Championships, North Korea comes back strong with one pair/group in each senior event as well as a Women's Pair and a Women's Group in the 11-16. Kazakhstan has a full team in the 11-16 age group and 2 Men's Pairs and a Mixed Pair in the Senior category. 17 year after their last appearance at a World Championships, Japan makes a timid come back into Acro with one 11-16 Women's Pair.

The Europeans will be next with the Age Group Competitions starting on Septembre 25. The UEG has published the nominative entries and an interview with Tim Sebastian from Germany on their website. They also created a event page on facebook.
The organizers will provide a live streaming, go to this page for a link to it.
As the European teams and officials go back home, those from the Americas wil l be travelling to Puerto Rico for their Continental Championships. The organizers created an event site with, among other information, the training and competition schedule.

Sportsacrobatics.info will be present at the Pan-American Championships and will publish reports and pictures of the competitions.

In the 11-16 Women's pair, Canada is in the best position to join the USA on the podium but Mexico is not far behind and could jump ahead. In other events, the USA are followed by Brazil and Puerto Rico.

The 2016 registrations
The definitive registration for the World Cup in Puurs, BEL and the provisional registration for the World Cup in Maia, POR, the World Age Group Competitions and the World Championships are available on the FIG website.

World Cup
37 pairs/groups from 13 countries should be present in Puurs and 41 units representing 11 countries in Maia. The mixed pairs event will be the biggest one with 12 and 13 couples respectively. With no women's group from Belgium or Russia, Great Britain should be the favorite in this event. North Korea is sending a men's pair and a women's pair to Belgium, this will be their first participation in an Acro World Cup since 1991.

World Age Groups
For the World Age Groups Conpetitions, 31 federations sent provisional registrations for a possible total of 832 gymnasts including 318 in the 11-16 age group (14 Men's Pairs, 36 Women's Pairs, 27 Mixed Pairs, 10 Men's Groups and 41 Women's Groups). In the 12-18 age group, 26 Women's Pairs, 35 Mixed Pairs, 14 Men's Pairs, 38 Women's Groups and 7 Men's Groups are registered for a total of 300 competitors. The remaining 214 gymnasts will compete in the 13-19 age groups as a member of the 16 Women's Pairs, 18 Mixed Pairs, 14 Men's Pairs, 30 Women's Groups and 7 Men's Groups registered.

World Championships
If all the federations who sent provisional entries confirm at least some of them, this 2016 edition of the World Championships will match the record of 25 participating countries achieved in 2010 and, under the IFSA, in 1996.
The current registrations include 23 Women's Pairs, 27 Mixed Pairs, 21 Men's Pairs, 28 Women's Groups and 15 Men's Groups. 3 years after participating at the 2013 Asian Championships, Iran will participate for the first time at an Acro World Championships.

The 2016 registrations
The definitive registration for the World Cup in Maia, POR, the World Age Group Competitions and the World Championships are available on the FIG website.
For all three competitions, the number of entries is substantially reduced compared to the provisional entries.

For the World Cup in Maia, there are only 3 Women's Pairs and 2 Men's Group which means no medal, World Cup points or prize money in these events. The other events include 5 Mixed Pairs, 5 Men's Pairs and 6 Women's Group.
This is much less than number of entries for the World Cup in Puurs and one might wonder is this meet is suffering from its proximity to the World Championships.

For the World Championships, the definitive enties include 13 Women's Pairs, 17 Mixed Pairs, 13 Men's Pairs, 15 Women's Groups and 9 Men's Groups for a total of 167 gymnasts coming from 21 countries. Brazil, Hungary, Ireland and Spain didn't confirm their provisional entries.

The number of gymnasts registered for the World Age Group Competitions is reduced from 832 to, what some might call a more manageable, 559. The number of federations however increase from 31 to 34. Compared to the Provisional entries, Hungary is missing but small delegations from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hong Kong, and Mexico were added.
The first week, 30 Women's Pairs, 17 Mixed Pairs, 7 Men's Pairs, 25 Women's Groups and 5 Men's Groups will compete in the 11-16 Age Group. A few days later, 19 Women's Pairs, 24 Mixed Pairs, 10 Men's Pairs, 27 Women's Groups and 7 Men's Groups in the 12-18 Age Group and 10 Women's Pairs, 12 Mixed Pairs, 7 Men's Pairs, 21 Women's Groups and 5 Men's Groups in the 13-19 Age Group will fight for the medals.

The WAGC lacking coverage
I usually don't post commentaries or opinions on this website but a word has to be said about the FIG coverage of the current World Age Group Competitions or actually the total lack thereof. No start list, no pictures, no reports, nothing; even if they publish the results, it is only after massive delays. As I write this the 12-18 are warming up for the finals but the FIG still hasn't publish all their results from the qualifications. It is even worse for the 13-19 Men's Pairs as their results from 2 days ago are still missing.
People who didn't make the trip have to rely on pictures of the score sheets some have published on social media. If you want to know more than the cold numbers, you'll have to rely on a report from the UEG which has nothing to do with this competition.

With 7 months to go until the electoral congress, let's hope the next FIG President will push the federation into valuing more the non-senior events in general and the Acrobatic Gymnastics World Age Group Competitions in particular.

The WAGC Medal Statistics
Considering all 3 Age Groups together, 11 countries shared the available medals, with five of them receiving the gold ones.
After keeping all the gold medals for themselves in 2012 and 2014, Russia and Great Britain had to share them with 3 countries which never won gold at a World Age Group before : Belgium, Portugal and the USA. It is the first time since this type of competition began in 2001 that we got to hear 5 different national anthems.
Another first are the 2 medals won by the Netherlands, making it the 19th country to win at least one medal in at least one World Age Group Competition.

The World Championships verdict
The 2016 World Championships ended with a victory for China in the Mens' Group category while Russia took the other 4 gold medals. All the results are available on this website and more information can be found on the FIG website.

These championships were also the qualifying event for the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw (POL). The top five countries after the qualification round are automatically qualified and the FIG Executive Committee determines the 6th country. To ensure the participation from the host country and as many continents as possible, the FIG selected a mixed pair from Poland and the mens' group from Australia.
The list of the qualified countries is available here.

The World Championships results can be found on the results and the archives pages.

May 2016 :

20th
The FIG Electoral Congress
Being an olympic year, 2016 is also an election year for the FIG. Its authorities will be renewed during its Congress October 18-20 in Tokyo (JPN).
Two persons are candidates to succede the outgoing FIG President, Bruno Grandi (ITA).

 - Mr Georges GUELZEC (FRA)
 - Mr Morinari WATANABE (JPN)

For the ACRO Technical Committee, Rosy Taeymans is the only candidate for the TC President position and, unfortunately, there are only four candidates for six member positions to fill. These candidates are :

 - Mr Karl WHARTON
 - Ms Irina NIKITINA
 - Mr Yurii GOLIAK
 - Ms Wieslawa MILEWSKA
Source : FIG Press release

The lack of candidacies for the ACRO TC actually reveals a bigger problem for our sport, a too small number of eligible candidates. As mentioned in the FIG Statutes, the candidate must possess a FIG Judges' brevet (cat. 1 or 2, valid from the 1.01.2013) and Coaches' "diploma" (3rd level).
With only 45 level 1 or 2 judges and 33 coaches with a level 3 diploma or a brevet, the number of persons fulfilling both requirements is 9, coming from 8 different countries. One of the problems is the number of Academies organized during this cycle. There were 6, none of them being level 3. For 2016, only one level 2 Academy is scheduled so far and it was cancelled.

If we want a full Technical Committee in 2021, the national federations will have to organise more Academies, more judges courses and send more participants to them. Eligible judges will have to get their coaching diploma during the next four years and level 3 or higher coaches will have to become judges.

The FIG 2017-2020 Rules : World Cup Series
With the Olympic Games fast approaching, the FIG has been working on new rules and codes for the next four years. While waiting for the new Code of Points and Tables of Difficulty, let's focus on the Rules for the FIG World Cup Competitions and Series which where published in March.

The first World Cup Series of the new cycle will already begin this year as the next four Series will take place from November of one year until March of the next year. For the 2016-2017 Series, the interested organisers must send their bids by the end of this month and the World Cup Competitions will be assigned by the FIG Executive Committee in August. Should the EC not be in a position to approve at least 3 bids, the World Cup Series will not take place.

Since 2008, the month of May has seen the most World Cup Competitions with a total of 6. Next is March with Maia organising a World Cup 5 years in a row during that month. Beside these 5, only 2 World Cup Competitions took place during the November-March period. The first one was in November 2011 in Forli (SMR) and the other one in Puurs (BEL) this year. Another one was planned for November 2014 in Great Britain but was cancelled.
The new rules could reward the Maia team with a World Cup Series "Finale" or deprive them of a sixth World Cup in a row if the FIG doesn't receive at least two other bids. Will organizers of "Winter" competitions step up to the plate or will usual World Cup organisers move their competitions to the November-March period? Only the future will tell.

The FIG 2017-2020 Rules : The Code of Points
The new Code of Points and the WAG Rules available on the FIG website.

6/16/16 : The Tables of Difficulty are now also availble.

During the World Championships, The ACRO TC gave an introduction to the new Code of Points and Sebastian Schipfel wrote this report (in german) about it. Here below is a translation of this report which will be updated after I get a chance to read the published documents.

The goal of the TC when making the new rules was triple:
1. Growth, especially more nations in seniors,
2. Simplify the Rules
3. Rebalance the weight of the Difficulty, Technical and Artistic notes

Difficulty (not for the 11-16 Age Group)
There are no more conversion tables. The difficulty note is the difficulty value divied by 100
80 value = 0.8 points
230 value = 2.3 points

Technical note
From 10 with deductions for the errors as usual; the note is then doubled.
The goal of the TC is absolute perfection just like in diving.

Artistic note
Same requirements for the exercise but a new evaluation system: no more deductions but a positive evaluation instead.
Still the same five categories for which the judges give each between 1.0 (for inacceptable performance) and 2.0 (for excellent performance).
So the total note will be between 5.0 minimum and 10.0 maximum.

The total score is therefore:
Value/100 + Technical note x 2 + Artistic note - Penalties

FIG Executive Committee Decisions
During its meeting help August 10-12, 2016 in Rio (BRA), the FIG Executive Committee took several decisions. Those concerning ACRO are :
- The Presidential Commission and a working group are empowered to assign World Cups.
- The EC has unanimously decided to upgrade the judges brevet category of the ACRO Technical Commitee members Frank Böhm (GER) and Nikolina Histova (BUL) from category 3 to category 2.

With this decision Frank and Nikolina are now eligible to become members of the next TC. They probably will be allowed to file a late candidacy which would grant a full TC for the next cycle. My comments regarding the need for more eligible persons however remain valid.
EDITED 8/26/16 : Frank and Nikolina have indeed been added to the list of candidates for the next FIG ACRO TC.

Scientific research
A few days ago, my daily web crawling in search of anything Acro related led me to a scientific paper titled I was an acrobat, am I in pain?
This research authored by Dr Ana Úrsula Martins is based on a survey of 590 retired acrobatic gymnasts that included questions about injuries during practice years and their present impact in daily life.
This article was presented at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Conference, last March in Monaco.
Dr Martins is a doctor in medicine and an acro coach and choreographer. Lourenço França, Portugal national coach, also contributed to this study.

If you are interested in other scientific research related to Acro (or other subjects), PubMed, published by the US National Library of Medecine, can be a good starting point. This link will give the results of a search with the terms acrobatic gymnastics.

The UEG President's Note 6 2017
In his Note N° 6 2017, Georges Guelzec, UEG President, renewed his commitment to the development of the acrobatic gymnastics and the other non-olympic disciplines. Writing about the integration of a new discipline discussed during the FIG Council in Baku, he notes that while he can understand the desire to expand gymnastics, he is "of the opinion that in terms of developments and the Olympic future, it is necessary to focus on the existing disciplines" adding "I'm sure the gymnasts of Aerobics, Acrobatics and Tumbling share the same vision. ... In Baku, other sirens seduced the ears of FIG.".
These comments come after M. Guelzec has been instrumental in including the acrobatic and aerobic gymnastics to the program of the 1st European Games two years ago in, somewhat ironically, the same city. Being back in Baku probably reminded him some good memories which, in turn, might have inspired him to voice publicly his continued support for the non-olympic gymnastics disciplines.

Thank you for your commitment M. President! Please know that it is truly appreciated.

ACRO day 1 at the World Games
July 24 was competition day for the Women's Pairs and the Mixed Pairs. Both competed their 2 qualifications routines and 4 of them in each category advanced to the finals and performed their combined routine.
The Women's Pairs began with their Balance exercise. Russia and Belgium showed they were the main contenders for the 2 highest places on the podium. The USA came in 3rd and Ukraine in 4th. The ranking remained unchanched after the Dynamic exercise even though Ukraine received a slightly higher score the the US pair for this exercise, preluding an interesting fight for the last available medal. China and the Netherlands ended the qualifications in 5th and 6th place respectively and didn't qualify for the finals.
In the finals, Daria Guryeva and Daria Kalinina (RUS) confirmed their ranking from the qualifications and took the gold medal. The silver medal went to Lore Vanden Berghe and Noémie Lammertyn (BEL) and the bronze medal to Veronika Hazelbok and Iryna Nazimova (UKR).

In the Mixed Pairs category, The World Champions, Marina Chernova and Georgii Pataraia (RUS) performed by far the most difficult exercises and received the highest scores in both execution and aristry. They finished the qualification rounds more than 3 points ahead of Portugal, Belarus and Great Britain who qualify for the finals in that order. At the bottom of the ranking were the USA and Poland.
The russian mixed pair took the gold medal in the finals with Volha Melnik and Artur Beliakou (BLR) and Katherine Williams and Lewis Walker (GBR) completing the podium in second and third place respectively.

ACRO day 2 at the World Games
The Women's Groups and Men's Pairs competed at the World Games this July 25. The ladies went first with their balance exercise, followed by the men's dynamic exercise.

The trio from Russia had the highest difficulty (204) but were outperformed in execution and artistry by Belarus. Great Britain finished the first routine in 3rd followed by Germany, the USA and China. The top three confirmed their ranking after their dynamic routine while the US trio outperformed Germany to take the last qualifying place into the finals. China kept its 6th place.
During the finals, Daria Chebulanka, Polina Plastinina and Kseniia Zagoskina (RUS) performed the strongest combined routine and with 29.440 claimed the gold medal. After dominating the qualifications, Julia Ivonchyk, Veronika Nabokina and Karina Sandovich (BLR) had to settle for silver with 29.040. Isabel Haigh, Emily Hancock and Ilisha Boardman (GBR) completed the podium after obtaining 28.235.

The men's pair from China performed the highest difficulty in both the dynamic and the balance exercise. However their execution and artistry scores earn them the 4th place. Russia, 2nd after the dynamic routine, finishes the qualifications in 3rd position. The pair from Germany received the highest score for their Balance exercise. This allowed them to jump ahead of Russia but was not enough to take the first place from Killian Goffaux and Robin Casse from Belgium. Great Britain and Israel finished both routines in 5th and 6th place respectively.
With a score of 29.310 in the finals, Tim Sebastian and Michail Kraft (GER) gave their country its first ever ACRO World Games gold medal. Igor Mishev and Nikolay Suprunov (RUS) received a 29.090 and the sivler medal while the belgian pair's 28.550 earned them the bronze.

The detailed results can also be found on the official 2017 World Games website.

The World Games: Men's Groups
The third and last day of ACRO competition at the Wroclaw World Games is showcasing the Men's Groups.
Ukraine and Russia both had mistakes in their Balance routines and are 5th and 6th in the temporary ranking. China performed an exercise with impressive difficulty (348) to take the lead. Great Britain, Israel showed they are medal contenders while Australia is in 4th place but far behind the top 3.
During the dynamic exercise, it was the Chineses's turn to make a mistake and they dropped to the 3rd place. The British group took advantage of this to take the lead and the one from Israel, the second place. The Russians and Ukrainians redeemed themsleves to moved ahead of Australia which finishes last. For the Ukrainian team, however, that was still not enough to qualify for the finals.

Conor Sawenko, Charlie Tate, Adam Upcott and Lewis Watts (GBR) performed the best combined exercise and won the gold medal with a score of 29.780. Zheng Li, Liuming Rui, Teng Zhang and Jaihuai Zhou (CHN) received a score of 29.500 and the silver medal. The bronze goes to Lidar Dana, Yannay Kalfa, Efi Efraim Sach and Daniel Uralevitch (ISR) with 29.080.

The European Age Group Competition
After the first day, Great Britain and Russia dominate the competition, sharing all but one first places and the majority of the top 3 places.

Did you know?
While all the Continental Championships strictly adhere to the FIG Code of Points, they each have their own Technical Regulations allowing for some variations in the competition format.

The Asian Championships were reserved, two years ago, to the seniors and the 11-16. This year the 12-18 age group was added to the program.
At the Pan-American Championships, three formations per country per category may participate. Two of them maximum may qualify for the finals.
In Europe, the Championships for the Seniors and Juniors (13-19) have, in addition to the All-Around finals, separate finals for the balance exercise and the dynamic one. The 11-16 and 12-18 age groups take part in a separate competition where only one set of medals is awarded.

The European Age Group Competitions finals
With 8 medals including 4 of gold each, Russia and Great Britain dominated the 2017 EAGC. The only gold medal remaining went to Israel and their 12-18 Women's Group. Israel also won the 11-16 Men's Group but this category was out of competition due to an insufficient number of participants.
The UEG has published 2 articles about the finals, one for the 11-16 and one about the 12-18.
The medal tally is here below and the detailed results are available on the UEG website.

The Pan-American Championships finals
The USA dominated the Pan-American Championships, winning all the categories in which they entered and taking both gold and silver in all the categories in which they had two formations but one. In the 12-18 age group, a Women's Pair from Canada won the silver medal and the second US pair had to settle with bronze.

An eye towards Buenos Aires
To participate at the next Youth Olympic Games in October 2018 in Buenos Aires (ARG), the Acro gymnasts must be born between 2000 and 2003 and competing in a Mixed Pair at the 13-19 level.
Looking at the participants in the 12-18 and 13-19 Mixed Pair categories at the Continental Championships, 14 of them meet these age requirements. Five of them would have to upgrade from the 12-18 age group to the 13-19 one either by the World Championships or have another pair qualify their country there while they prepare for the YOG themselves.
Australia might have some age eligible pairs but that information is not available at this time. It is of course also possible that other pairs will enter the race next year.
Already having 14 age eligible pairs for 12 places available is certainly encouraging.

19 Mixed Pairs, eligible for the Youth Olympic Games, will try during the WAGC to qualify and become the first Acrobatic Gymnastics representatives to participate in these prestigious competitions.
Per the FIG YOG Rules, quotas per continent are applied to the qualification places. Consequently, three pairs are certain to give a place to their respective National Olympic Committee (NOC). South Africa having the only participating pair from Africa, will receive the place reserved for this continent. Because the organizing country, Argentina, doesn't have any delegation at the WAGC, the USA and Puerto Rico will receive the 2 places allocated to America. For Asia, 4 duos representing 3 NOCs will try to obtain one of the 2 places available to them. Finaly, 12 pairs from 11 countries will have to share the 6 places devoted to Europe and the one for Oceania which is made available by the lack of 13-19 mixed pair from that part of the world.

A training camp in Bristol (GBR) is added on the calendar page.

The European Games : qualification procedure
The UEG published the qualification procedure for the 2019 European Games.
For the Acrobatic Gymnastics, the 8 best ranked in the Women's Groups and Mixed Pairs categories during the coming World Championships will earn non-nominative places for their NOC. This represents a significant reduction compared to the 11 trios and duos who qualified 4 years ago for the first edition of these Games.

10th
The Youth Olympic Games qualifications
According to the YOG procedures and the 13-19 mixed pairs qualifications results, the following National Olympic Committees should be awarded Acrobatic Gymnastics tickets to Buenos Aires:
Africa: RSA
America: PUR, USA
Asia: CHN, KAZ
Europe: BLR, BUL, GBR, POR, RUS, UKR
Additionally, Israel should receive the place normally attributed to Oceania due to the absence of mixed pairs from that continent.

This is just my guess and these qualificatives places will have to be confirmed by the FIG.

The World Age Group Competitions
In addition to www.acrobatics2018.com, the FIG also published a page with the WAGC results.

12-18

Russia leads the medal count in this age group with 3 gold and 2 silver, followed by Great Britain with 2 gold and 2 silver and Ukraine with 1 silver and 1 bronze. Australia, Israel, Portugal and the USA each get a bronze medal.

13-19

Nine different countries shared the available medals, four of them the gold ones: Israel, Kazakhstan, Portugal and Russia (2). The other countries with at least one silver or bronze medal are Belarus, Belgium, Great Britain, Ukraine and the USA.

The World Championships
The FIG published several articles in the lead up to the World Championships including one about how to follow the competitions.
The organizers will also have plenty of information on their website and social media pages.

13th
The World Championships - day 1

The 26th Acrobatic Gymnastics World Championships are open!

After the opening ceremony, the Women's Group and Men's Pairs presented their first exercise. The general level of the competition is very high with some dealing with their nerves better than others. Of particuliar notice, one of the favorites, the Belgian Men's pair had 2 major issues and are currently only in 11th position.
Germany, North Korea and Great Britain 1 scored the highest with their balance routine.
The top of the US trio seems to have hurt herself during their performance, we wish her well and hope they can perform their other exercises. The trio from Great Britain scared the audience twice and this is reflected in their scores as they are currently in last position.
The leaders after the first exercise are Russia, Belarus and China.

The second sessions began with the Women's Pairs. In this category, the favorites from Russia also experience a problem and are currently in 6th place. Israel is leading followed by Ukraine and North Korea.
In the Men's Group category, the first 3 quatuors to perform all had problems during a pyramid transition. When China performed the first clean routine in this category, they received big applauses from the spectators. They took the lead to give it away to only their compatriotes. Israel performed also a strong routine but had to settle with the 3rd place in the temporary ranking.
The mixed pairs performed in alternance with the Women's Pairs and the Men's Groups. There was no surprise there, Russia performed an extremely difficult routine to take the lead with more than 2 full points over Azerbaijan 1, second, and Belarus 1 in third place.

The Women's Groups and Men's pairs performed their second routine in the evening. Sadly, the top of the US trio is indeed hurt and didn't perform their second exercise.
Russia confirmed their dominance in the Women's Group category. Belarus keep their second place while Israel took the third one. The Men's pair from Belgium got the highest score for their dynamic routine which takes them up to the 8th place after 2 exercises. Germany could hold to its first place, they are followed by Russia and Great Britain 1.

The live scoring is available here.

I want here to thank the FIG for allowing me to cover the event as a photographer and use the media internet access to post this report. Here is a first picture of the leaders in each category after day 1.

14th
The World Championships - day 2
The day begins with the combined exercise for the women's group and the men's pairs, followed by the the women's pairs, mixed pairs and men's groups second exercise.
Igor Minchev and Nikolay Suprunov (RUS) received the highest score this morning an jump ahead of Germany in the qualifications ranking while North Korea jumps from 6th to the 3rd place. The belgian pair of Robin Casse and Kilian Goffaux remain in 8th place but with the second highest score for their combined exercise and the finals starting from zero, they remain a medal contender.
Daria Chebulanka, Polina Plastinina and Ksenia Zagoskina (RUS) continue to dominate the women's group category, followed by Belarus. The trio from Israel struggled in a motion from planche to ring and this allowed Belgium to take the 3rd place of the qualifications away from them.

Marina Chernova and Georgii Pataria (RUS) were the first to perform their balance routine and as they scored above 30 again, no one could catch up to them. Those who came the closest are Belarus 2 and 1.
In the women's pairs category, the top 3 remains the same with Mika Lefkovitts and Roni Surzon (ISR) inthe lead followed by Ukraine and North Korea.
In the men's group, only one group had an issue and it was the leaders. China 1 is therefore out of the top 3 which is now composed of China 2, Israel and Portugal.

The World Championships - The first finals
2 sets of medals were distributed today.
In the Men's pairs category, both medal contenders, Belgium and Germany didn't perform as well as this morning and are out of luck this time. The pairs from Russia, North Korea and Great Britain performed the strongest routines giving them access to the podium and the medals. Mr Morinari Watanabe, President of the FIG distributed the gold medals to Igor Minchev and Nikolay Suprunov.
After their mistake this morning, the women's group from Israel opted for a straight handstand instead of a ring. They performed a clean routine, ending just one step away from the podium. Russia and Belarus confirmed their ranking from the qualifications to take gold and silver while China took the bronze. In addition to winning this competition, Daria Chebulanka, Polina Plastinina and Ksenia Zagoskina also had the honor to receive the medals from Mr Jacques Rogge, honorary President of the International Olympic Committee.

15th
The World Championships - The team results
The qualifications came to an end this morning with the combined exercise for the women's pairs, the mixed pairs and the men's groups.
After this, the teams awards ceremony place. As a reminder, national federations enter teams of 3 units with at least 1 pair and 1 group and the ranking of these units after the qualifications are converted into points based on the nmber of countries participating in any category at the World Championships. Russia wins the gold medal with 57 points followed by Israel and Belarus, both with 49 points. Per the tie breaking rules, Israel, having a men's group in its team, wins the silver medal and Belarus the bronze one.
The medals were awarded by Rosy Taeymans - FIG TC President, Wieslawa Milewska - FIG TC Member and May Miller - FIG Acro Athletes Representative.

The World Championships - The last finals
These World Championships ended with the finals in the Women's Pairs, Mixed Pairs and Men's groups categories.
The women's pairs went first and "the Daria's" renewed their title from 2 years ago with a score of 29.830. The silver medal went to North Korea and the bronze to Israel.
The mixed pairs finals gave Marina Chernova her 3rd World title in a row and his partner Georgii Pataria his second. While her 3rd title is a record in the mixed pairs category, Marina is still one title shy of the women's pair Yulia Lopatkina and Anna Mokhova who won in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004. The silver went to Belarus and the bronze to Belgium.
In the men's group, Israel received the highest score, China finished second and Russia third.

The World Championships: A recap.

A good organisation
From what I saw, the organisation of these championships was very good thanks, among other things, to 400+ volunteers. The competition hall configuration, with the floor placed diagonally and the light show, was interesting and the multilingual announcement by Niels Daniel was impeccable.
The competitions ran smoothly and having a full house for the finals was heartwarming.

Marina the Great
Yes, Marina Chernova won her third world title, her second with current partner Georgii Pataria. What was even more impressive is how they won. All their routines had a difficulty score above 3.0 which is more than half a point above their nearest opponents. If I'm not mistaken, the 4 dynamic elements in their combined routine are 4 triple saltos and their balance elements are as difficult. In their dynamic exercise, they also have a full in full out straight. This extreme difficulty didn't stop them, however, to get the highest execution scores in their category. All this is why, in my humble opinion, Marina is, and will remain a great lady in the history of the Acrobatic Gymnastics.

Belgium: finally!
After legitimate hopes for medals were met with disapointing results in 1999 in Ghent for Kaat Croubels and Tine Dewaele, in 2007 in Puurs for Maaike Crocket, Soen Geirnaert and Corinne Van Hombeeck en during these Championships for Robin Casse and Vincent Goffaux, it is the mixed pair Marte Snoeck and Bram Roettger who finally gave Belgium its first World medal on home soil.

The first photos are published. Please be patient while I'm preparing more of them. Thank you.

Belarus, Belgium, the Netherlands and Russia got a qualificative place in both categories. Azerbaijan, France, Poland and Spain earn a place in the mixed pairs category while Great Britain, Israel, Portugal and Ukraine complete the Women's group roster.

The acro-companion website: TS made easy!
Sportsacrobatics.info was kinda feeling lonely on the web so I'm very pleased to present you https://www.acro-companion.com/.

This website allows coaches and federations to create and store their Acrobatic Gymnastics Tariff Sheets and competition organizers to receive and manage them. The software automatically finds the value of the chosen elements, this should reduce the number of errors and, therefore also facilitate the work of the difficulty judges and CJPs.
The website claims that a senior Tariff Sheet can be created in just 4 minutes instead of 45. Since I never created a Tariff Sheet myself, I'll let you test it and verify those times for yourself.

The application developpers are Acrobatic Gymnastics coaches and judges themselves and the website was recently approved by the FIG and the UEG to be used for their official competitions (see the ACRO newsletter Nr 5 - June 2018.
It has been developped using the Google development tools and, unfortunately only works with the Google Chrome web browser.

I wish the acro-companion and its developers a successful future.

The World Cup in Baku (AZE)
The nominative registrations and Draw of Lots for the World Cup in Baku are available on the FIG website, confirming almost exactly the definitive entries. The only difference being India sending 1 Women's Group instead of 2, this is however taking this category, together with the Women's Pairs, out of the prize money, medals and World Ranking points.

This competitions was first announced as the first of the 2018-19 World Cup. Since then, the World Cup in Lisbon was cancelled and the July EC report presented the next 4 stages as the "2019 World Cup", putting this assertion into doubt. A look at the FIG World Ranking shows "AZE" as the 3rd stage of the "World Ranking 2018". This allows us to speculate on what's at stake for this World Cup Competition.
Because no points will be awarded to the Women's Pairs and Groups, the current ranking will remain unchanged with Lore Vanden Berghe - Moëmie Lammertyn (BEL) and Ksenia Zagoskina - Daria Chebulanka - Polina Pastinina (RUS) as their respective winners. In the Men's Pairs category, Kilian Goffaux - Vincent Casse (BEL) are currently in the lead but their absence in Azerbaijan gives Mikhail Vikhrov - Aleksandr Shubin (RUS) and Aliakset Zayats - Artsiom Yashchanka (BLR) a chance to get ahead of them. In the Mixed Pairs category the current leaders, Victoria Aksenova - Kirill Startsev (RUS) will be present and are the favorite to win the 2018 World Cup. Finally, out of the 4 Men's Groups with World Ranking points, the only one who will be present in Baku is Albert Danilishin - Ivan Shabelnik - Aleksandr Shutov - Evgenii Zvarych (RUS). They are therefore certain to come home from Azerbaijan on top of the 2018 Ranking.

The Acro Champions League
Here below is a competition report from Lourenço França.

The 1st edition of the Acro Champions League was help in Maia, Portugal.
The competition had an interesting new format. It really was a club competition. Each club competed together, meaning that all the partnerships of that club competed in a row, so the audience had the perspective of that club work.
Also each club could come with 3 partnerships in the age groups 11-18, 12-19 or +14 (senior), so these gymnasts will be 12-18, 13-19 and Senior in just 2 months, in 2019. The final ranking was the sum of the best 2 balance and the best 2 dynamic of each club; this opened the possibility of some teams performing just 1 routine (where they are stronger) which also made the level of the competition to rise.
We also had some cool new stuff:

Overall it was a great competition and a great atmosphere. Raftis Saint-Petersburg (RUS) won the first ACL and King Edmund (GBR) and Acro Clube da Maia (POR) completed the podium in 2nd and 3rd. So next year Russia can bring 4 clubs!

http://www.sport-folio.net/ has a great coverage of the event with report and photos.
All details can be found on www.acrochampionsleague.com.

Counting with you next year for the 2nd edition of Acro Champions League and Youth Acro Champions League (this one just for 11-16) on 14-17 November 2019 - just 2 weeks after the Europeans!

The World Cup in Baku (AZE)
A report of the World Cup in Baku is available on the FIG website.
This report mentions this competitions is the first one of the 2018-19 World Cup Series and the FIG 2018 World Ranking does not mention Baku anymore. All my speculations published earlier were therefore all for nothing! Or just for the fun of it if you prefer.
On the other hand, this means that this Series will be the first one with five events and, with only the 3 best results counting, it will be interesting to see how countries will choose which ones to attend. Since no points were awarded in the Women's Pairs and Groups categories, they both remain wide open. In the Men's and Mixed categories, Russian gymnasts took the lead in Baku and it might be hard to catch up with them. Only the future will tell.

The results and the 2018 World Ranking are posted in the results section.
2019-01-10: Correction: According to the World Cup Rules, The 4 best results will count for the 2018-19 World Cup Series, not 3 as mentioned in the article. Sorry about this oversight.

A look towards the next cycle
As the draft Code of Points should be sent to the federations this month and with the congress about 13 months away, let's look at what could be our next Technical Committee.
Based on the FIG Statutes, 10 persons representing 9 countries are eligible to be member or president of the 2021-24 Acrobatics Gymnastics TC, the seven current members, Tonya Case (USA), Valiantsin Hubenok (BLR) and Dmitrii Vinnikov (RUS). However, 2 of them, Irina Nikitina (RUS) and Carl Wharton (GBR) will be hit by the 3 mandates limit. Three options are available to them: seak a different position, retire or request a 4th mandate as a TC member. The latter would require the approval of the Congress before the elections take place.
Others could become eligible if, before the World Championships, they pass the level 3 Academy exam, upgrade their judging brevet or both. If you are one of those and willing to apply for the next TC, let your federation know. While the FIG could organize a judges course in Lausanne, we need National Federations to step up and organize a level 3 Acrobatic Gymnastics Academy, which would be the first one since 2012.

The IOC fails Acro and the female gymnasts!
The IOC recently announced the programme for the 2022 Youth Olympic Games which only includes the Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics.
In its communique, it proudly announce that "the sports of boxing, gymnastics and wresting will also reach gender parity for the first time." However, as shown in the full Programme, this means that 108 young men will compete in MAG but the 108 spots available for the women will be split between WAG, RG individual and RG Groups.
What the IOC hails as a victory should actually be considered a let down for the other Gymnastics disciplines and an insult for the Women in Sport they pretend to support.

Coaches courses
The FIG has updated its calendar with several Age Group Camps and a Level 3 Academy.
The Academy will be held in Maia (POR) from March 28 until April 4 and will be the first one in Acrobatic Gymnastics since 2012. Maia will also host an Age Group Camp during the same period, the other ones will be held in Africa and the Americas.

New Judges rules
The FIG has published new Judges rules documents.
First, the Reference Judges are gone effective immediately per the "ACRO Specific Judges' Rules 2020".
For the next cycle, the "General Judges Rules 2021-2024" bring the following changes. The Olympic Games are the only Group 1 competitions, the World Games and World Championships are group 2, the Continental Games and Championships and the World Cups are group 3 while the World and Continental Age Group Competitions as well as the other FIG approved tournaments and competitions are group 4.
This document has a new section specifying the minimum standards for individual judges per panel in each competition group. For the group 2 competitions, there will be 1 CJP, 2 DJ, 6 EJ (2 middle count) and 6 AJ (2 middle count). This is also the maximum for all competitions regarless of their group. For the group 4 competitions other than the WAGC, the minimum is 1 CJP, 2 DJ, 3 EJ (middle count), 3 AJ (middle count) and the time and line may be National judges.

Finally, the judges exams will have no theory section.

Registrations and relocation
The World Cup in Bulgaria will be held in Sofia instead of Burgas.

The FIG has published the nominative registrations for the World Cup in Maia (POR), the definitive registrations for the ones in Sofia (BUL) and Puurs (BEL) and the provisional registrations for the World Age Group Competitions and the World Championships.
For the World Cup in Maia, the definitive registrations were revised on January 9 to add Bulgaria and a second Mens' Group from Russia. This will allow the Mens' Groups to receive medals, prize money and the first World Ranking points of this serie. The other categories already received points in Lisbon (POR) last September. From the nominative entries, the World Ranking leaders in the Mens' and Mixed Pairs categories will be present in Maia but the leaders in the Womens' Pairs and Groups categories will not. This gives for the Pair and Group from Portugal, currently second, a chance to take the lead.
